We had so much fun at last year’s Piccolo Spoleto Festival that we wanted to get ahead of the game this year and preview this year’s event for our residents. Living at Alta Brighton Park, just a short drive down I-26 to Charleston, SC, places you in a prime location to enjoy the festivities, which include art exhibitions, live music, dance, theater, cultural events, film screenings, and community celebrations. The annual festival, which this year runs from May 24 to June 9, launched in Charleston in 1979 and remains a beloved tradition throughout the community.
One of the pillars of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival is the music, particularly the variety and volume of live music events. The series includes shows throughout Charleston. Hit the open seas during one of the annual harbor cruises featuring mostly blues musicians. Fans of classical and jazz music won’t have trouble finding their groove, either. The festival also showcases performances by local children’s choirs and high school ensembles. See the full lineup here.
Come to Marion Square for Family Day and discover your inner artist – no matter your age. This opening Saturday event includes opportunities for attendees to dance, discover hidden musical talent and free performances for children of all ages. Children’s activities are planned at the library throughout the festival, including college theater performances of children’s stories. See the Charleston Museum come to life at Nighttime at the Museum. The event includes costumed re-enactments, special displays, and scavenger hunts.
Theater & Dance
The Piccolo Spoleto Festival includes a variety of entertaining theatrical and dance performances. Attend performances at Footlight Players, Pure Theater, Threshold Rep, Theater 99, and a variety of other venues throughout Charleston. Prepare to be inspired by the dance ensembles performing jazz, tap, ballet, tap, hip-hop, and contemporary routines.
During the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition, Marion Square transforms into a beautiful open-air market with fine and creative artists exhibiting and selling their work. Browse the artists’ tents as you view original paintings in an array of styles, photography, crafts, and more. This memorable experience includes daily demonstrations, and more than 80 artists will be on hand to answer questions and show their artwork. The event also includes demonstrations, tips, and classes for aspiring artists. The event also includes the Piccolo Spoleto Crafts Exhibition, which showcases some of the finest craft artists in the area.
Attend different literary and film events throughout the festival. One of our favorite events is the Sundown Poetry reading, which features literary works read by their authors. Bibliophiles will can participate in author discussions and book signings, an author series luncheon, and Piccolo Fiction, the longest-running event devoted specifically to fiction.
