It’s safe to say Summerville has been a major beneficiary of the craft beer boom. Two standout breweries – both close to your Alta Brighton Park home – have burst onto the crowded South Carolina beer scene since 2015. Venture down the road to Charleston and you’ll find even more hop-infused adventures to be had.
Here are a few of our favorite breweries in and around Summerville:
Summerville’s first brewery specializes in American and German lagers. Choose from a diverse lineup of beers, including a rotating mix of small-batch specialties, and graze on food truck fare at this popular hangout. A strong sense of community is Oak Road’s calling card. Visit and it’ll feel like hanging out in your buddy’s garage, the Oak Road website proclaims. Trivia and bingo nights, beer release parties, and soccer watch parties are just a few of the community-focused events you’ll find on the Oak Road events calendar.
Wide Awake opened its doors in February and has been wowing with its diverse fleet of unique brews ever since. Citrusy IPAs, chocolatey brown ales, cherry porters, potent sours, refreshing wits and wheats – you’ll find it all here. Live music, trivia nights, and a rotating cast of food trucks make for an eclectic atmosphere you’ll want to get in on.
Playful vibes await at Snafu in North Charleston. This 2-year-old brewery packs a big personality. Just check out the names of these brews – Snafu-Tang, Shadow of Death, Kinky Lola, and Donnie Dark Ale. And that’s just a sampling. Tucked into a nondescript building in an industrial section of town, Snafu’s lively, inviting atmosphere comes in an unlikely package. Try your hand at bingo and trivia nights, sample culinary creations at visiting food trucks, or even play a little ping pong. Snafu has it all.
Come for the beer. Stay for the food. Holy City’s expansive lineup of brews features classics like the Pluff Mud Porter and Holy City Pilsner and quirkier efforts like the Chucktown Follicle Brown and Yeast Wrangler imperial IPA. Oh, and about that food – Holy City’s smoked wings are said to be divine. You’ll find other pub staples like pretzels, fries, and burgers, as well as a diverse selection of sandwiches. Check out the menu here!
Grab a craft brew from Rusty Bull’s lengthy tap list and then head next door for some friendly competition at ChuckTown Axe Throwing. Not many breweries offer a 1-2 punch quite like that. Behind the bar, you’ll find go-to brews like the Dance Naked IPA, Dubbel Trouble, Tumbling Monk Porter, and Piece of Wit. It’s not all axes and beer at Rusty Bull. The onsite kitchen serves up trusty and tasty apps like boiled peanuts and wings and an entree menu highlighted by the Charleston Hot or Not Chicken Sandwich. Try it with a fried green tomato!
